Why You Should Schedule Early-Morning Surgery for Your Dog

by Leonard Wallace

If your dog needs surgery, then you'll have to decide when to schedule the procedure. This may not seem important, but the timing does matter. You'll probably find that the experience goes more smoothly if you schedule surgery for early in the morning. Wondering why? Here are a few of the reasons.

It's Easier to Deal With Fasting

If your dog is having a general anaesthetic, then it will need to fast before its surgery. You won't be able to feed your dog for a good few hours before you take it to the vet.

Not eating at regular mealtimes upsets any pet. You can't explain why you aren't giving your dog food — it won't understand. It will whine or beg to be fed, upsetting you in the process.

If you have an early-morning appointment, you get up and whisk your dog to the surgery. You can use night time as the fasting period, and your pet won't have time to worry about being hungry.

You'll Save Money

If your dog is scheduled for day surgery, then you should be able to take it home on the same day. This will prevent your dog from having to experience a stressful overnight stay without you. However, there's more chance that your dog will be kept at the vet's overnight if it has a later surgery.

Your dog needs time to recover from the anaesthetic before it goes home. If it takes a while to do this after a surgery later in the day, then your vet may want to keep your dog for the evening. This will increase your bill while also adding to your pet's stress.

If you schedule early surgery, your pet has time to get over the anaesthetic. You're more likely to get it home on the same day.

You Spend Less Time Worrying

You're bound to worry about your dog's surgery even if it's only having a routine operation. The longer you have to wait to take your dog to the vet, the more anxious you might become. Your dog will pick up on this anxiety. This isn't good for your pet; you want it to be as calm as possible before the surgery. If you make an early start, then the appointment doesn't hang over your day. You also won't make your dog so anxious.

Talk to your vet or their receptionist about the best timings for your dog's surgery. They'll also want your dog safely home as soon as possible, so they will do their best to get you the appointment time you need. Locate veterinary services near you for more information.

About Me

The Lifespan Cycle Of Vet Care For Dogs

I never had the opportunity to have a pet when I was a child because my family moved around a lot. So, when my kids begged to get a dog, I was super excited. However, not knowing anything about the care of canines, I had to do a lot of research to make sure we kept our puppy healthy. This blog is all about the vet side of taking care of dogs. From annual vaccinations to what signs should trigger an emergency vet visit, I wanted to make sure that all new dog owners are aware of how important regular vet care is when it comes to raising a pet.
