3 Indicators It Is Time to Take Your Cat to a Vet Clinic

by Leonard Wallace

Cats are mysterious creatures and are excellent at hiding illnesses until it is too late. In the wild, a weak animal is an easy target for predators, and that's why they tend to hide illnesses. So, don't get surprised when you see your cat behaving that way.

Knowing when your cat is suffering from a disease is not always easy. Luckily, a few signs can indicate a need to visit the vet clinic. Keep reading to learn these signs:

1. The Cat Breathes Unusually

Unlike dogs, cats don't pant a lot. So, anytime your cat starts breathing with its mouth open, then know that it is experiencing some respiratory distress. The most common cause of respiratory distress is feline asthma. However, it could also be caused by other issues such as heart failure and respiratory tract issues. So, as a cat owner, it is vital to keep track of your pet's breathing. Normal cats breathe between 15 to 30 times per minute. Anything below or above this range is a cause for alarm and requires the attention of a vet.

2. The Cat Has Lost or Gained a Lot of Weight

Drastic changes in your cat's weight indicate that all is not well. Another significant sign is a sudden change in the feline's appetite. Though it is normal for a cat to skip their meals occasionally, they should not do it frequently. If your cat stops eating altogether, then you should consider visiting a vet clinic.

One reason your cat may put on a lot of weight suddenly is when they become pregnant. Your vet will perform an ultrasound to confirm it. If indeed the cat is pregnant, the vet will offer you some tips on how to care for the pet and prepare for the litter.

3. The Cat's Gum Colour Changes

Change in gum colour is an obvious indicator of an underlying problem. However, not all cats welcome the idea of having their mouths opened and inspected. If your feline friend is in this category, you'll have to be sneaky about it and find other ways to do it. For instance, you can peek inside their mouths as they yawn. A healthy cat's gums should be a pink shade. If you notice the gums looking pale, take them to the veterinary hospital immediately. Pale gums could be a result of reduced blood production or blood loss.

It is important to look out for the signs of illness so you can take your pet to the vet clinic before it is too late. A professional vet will analyse the symptoms, carry out tests to determine what is affecting your cat, and administer the appropriate treatment.

About Me

The Lifespan Cycle Of Vet Care For Dogs

I never had the opportunity to have a pet when I was a child because my family moved around a lot. So, when my kids begged to get a dog, I was super excited. However, not knowing anything about the care of canines, I had to do a lot of research to make sure we kept our puppy healthy. This blog is all about the vet side of taking care of dogs. From annual vaccinations to what signs should trigger an emergency vet visit, I wanted to make sure that all new dog owners are aware of how important regular vet care is when it comes to raising a pet.
